The Agama Story

What began back in 2005 as a humble cluster of campsites with a delightfully rustic open-air ablution block – then known as Agama River Camp, was the innovation of Jon & Monique Leach.

The popularity of the campsites quickly warranted the construction of a thatched lapa area including; a well-stocked bar, homely restaurant and a panoramic roof deck, perfect for enjoying the beautiful sunsets with a cold beer.

Further success brought the addition of ten bush-style chalets, each equipped with a modern bathroom, air-conditioning, comfortable beds and a private verandah.

When Jon & Monique opted for well-earned retirement in 2019, the new owners carried the prestigious torch aloft and have taken Agama to the next level.

Under the expert guidance of locally-born General Manager, Belinda Burger, Agama River Camp has blossomed into a fully-fledged resort of excellence, now known as ‘Agama Lodge’.

“Just before Covid, we started the ambitious project of building; 20 additional, extremely spacious, deluxe chalets, another 10 standard chalets  AND a huge swimming pool……
Only through the loyalty, understanding & dedication of our hardworking team could we continue the building through the pandemic.
As a result of their commitment, we can now sleep 80 guests and accommodate 100+ day visitors.

The unique feature of all of our chalets is a private roof terrace where guests can enjoy a romantic sundowner or the very popular, novel option of sleeping out under the stars.

Current projects include; the addition of a tyre repair workshop and a complete overhaul of our campsite, which should be ready for campers in late 2023.

They say the proof is in the pudding… and on that note we are proud to say that Trip Advisor is now ranking us in the top ten speciality lodges of the Sossusvlei area.”

Why the Name Agama?

Agama pays homage to the vibrant family of lizards (Agama planiceps, the Namib Roack Agama), that inhabit the dry, open savannah regions of Africa.
This curious reptile was the first creature Jon & Monica encountered upon entering the old farm gate, and accordingly, they felt it fitting to honour the beautiful creature that welcomed them to their new home.

You’ll often spot different varieties of this brightly coloured lizard during your stay at Agama Lodge, both in its natural form and represented in various art pieces.

The heart of Agama Lodge is our dynamic, energetic, and diverse team.
Like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, each member plays a crucial role in ensuring that every guest leaves with lasting memories of the ultimate Agama experience.
