Overview
Elim Dune is a prominent natural feature located within the expansive Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia. This majestic sand dune is a popular destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts alike, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding desert landscape.
Location and Accessibility
Situated just 5 kilometers from the Sesriem entrance gate of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, Elim Dune is easily accessible to visitors. The dune is located on the left side of the road leading to Sossusvlei and is marked by a small signpost.
A short drive off the main road will lead you to a parking area, from where a brief hike will take you to the top of the dune. Take note that the first horizon you will see is not the actual top of the dune, as you start to approach that, the actual top of Elim dune will become apparent.
Features and Attractions
Elim Dune stands approximately 100 meters high, offering panoramic views of the surrounding desert, mountains, and grassland. The dune is particularly renowned for its stunning sunsets, when the setting sun casts a warm, golden glow over the rippling sands, creating a spectacle of light and shadow.
The dune is also home to a variety of desert-adapted wildlife. Visitors may spot creatures such as oryx, springbok, and ostriches, as well as a variety of bird species and arachnids.
Because of its close proximity to the Sesriem gate, it is a popular stop for when the sun is setting, as it allows for a quick dash to the exit before the gate closes at sunset!
